Day One- 1/4 Lap of America 39210 Mile 0, still in the garage I wonder what Dave was thinking as we headed out of the City. If I were him I would be wondering if maybe I should have brought along extra sedatives, or a dart gun, or something. I had just found out that our route included an extra unnecessary 200 miles or so in Ohio. Pardon me, but there was going to be enough Ohio in the program as it was, and we had to get to Wisconsin in a few days, and it was raining. It was raining everywhere. I had probably brought it on with all the stamping and screaming I did. My own little rain dance. Maybe I am wrong, maybe I did know about the extra 200 miles, but I hadn't been thinking straight for the last couple weeks. It was my birthday, it was a big election for the board of my building, and I was running 4 candidates to replace myself. I still haven't finished the '01 Fixit Video and web pages, my computers were crashing, my Mom was in the hospital and quite frankly I didn't know my ass from a hole in the ground. What the hell, let's go. Driving north instead of south heading out the West Side Highway, top down in 50ish degrees, the clouds to the west sticking their collective tongues out at us. Then I got wet. Wha? Oh, I see, it's the sprinklers. They're watering the trees in the median, and the nearest sprinkler is misaligned, sending streams of water directly into my car. No way to get out of the line of fire, there's traffic everywhere. Just sit there and get wet, waiting for the light to change. Someone in the right lane took pity on me, and I escaped. The West Side Highway has a history of special effects for Dave and me, it was probably at the exact same spot where Dave discovered a flat tire on our St. Patty's Day trip to the Foggs. So, it could be worse. On we went. Out Interstate 80, over the George Washington Bridge, west and west and west and west.  |
