August 14th started like a normal day. Freddie jumped in the refrigerator, trying to scare me half to death, like I'd accidentally close him in there.

I went food shopping after this photo.

Note the 2 Brita pitchers and the blue glass water carafe. I like my water!

I even had a grocery delivery for oranges and watered my plants.

Then the air conditioners stopped, the printers shut down, the phones stopped working.

And they didn't come back.

My apartment now is two units, they both were powerless, I knew that this was more than a blown fuse. I looked outside to see if it was more than my building, picked up my cell phone and called Jon. He said the power had gone off for a moment in his office in New Jersey.

This is what it looked like out my window.

It took me a few moments to realize that this was a lot more than the usual people out there in Union Square at rush hour. People were pouring like ants out of the circular Subway awning- you see that awning on the opening credits of "Mad About You" reruns. The sidewalk in the shade is packed with people, no one has any idea what is going on, traffic has stopped, stoplights are off. Everyone is thinking about September 11. (Sorry my windows are really dirty, I need a decent window cleaner!) Adding to the crowd is every store shoving their employees out onto the street as they lock down, every office building, everything.
