This cockpit trunk release looks like
a good idea...
but actually it is a pita. It means either you have to use a key
to open the trunk, making for lots of scratches, or you have to
run back to the door and open it to open the trunk.
Andrew adds:
Every
newer BMW I have driven has the remote key entry, and just pressing
that button releases the trunk.
(I'm not sure if Andrew is saying that newer
Z4s have a trunk release on the keychain)
And much worse...
... I was told this is the ONLY
way to shut the trunk.
Put your hand right on the PAINT and shove. There isn't anything
else to hold on to to close or open the trunk but the paint.
Jim B adds:
There is a recessed hand grip
on the inside. Hey, it's not the greatest but if you cup your
hand and pull downwards with sufficient gusto it works fine. Though...
my better half can't seem to do it ... Andrew's method:
To close the trunk, I just put 3 fingers on the roundel and
with light pressure the trunk closes very easily. I never push
on the paint to close mine. |
Huzzah- a way to turn off
the passenger airbag
Everyone gets an ashtray and a lighter. I don't know what the hole
is for in the ashtray. The ashtray doesn't
look very ergonomically correct for a smoker, and it doesn't seem
likely to be used for holding anything else. Andrew adds:
The ashtray hole is I think to put a lit
cigarette in, it will stop burning due to lack of oxygen. No need
to stub it out, and it can be relit later.
There is no armrest storage for "stuff" near the gearshift. (Keys,
glasses, coins..) I see Z4 owners pile stuff by their emergency
brake handle. :(
There is a button below the lighter beside the gearshift
you can see that lights up if the passenger airbag is disabled. Andrew answered my question:
The airbag light is really not anything
that stands out when driving at night. There are so many little
orange lights that the entire cockpit is aglow in a stange amber
light. There are actually 2 very small orange spotlights in the
bottom of the rear view mirror that light up the entire center gearshift
area. I found this very interesting for some reason and still like
to wave my hand in the light at night.
OK, now I'm jealous Andrew! |
When I told my
wife why I wanted these pics, she told me that using the depression
inside the trunk lid was easier for her. I'm about a foot taller
and 100 lbs heavier, so I liked my method better. But either way,
we are not pushing down the lid!

I am very biased
as I truly love driving this car!
Welcome to the dark side Andrew... very big GRIN!
Thank you for the pics and the info Andrew!
