Fixit Day 01
Printed July 17, 2001
This is the story of Z3 Fixit Day 2001, as told by it's participants. These are their pictures and stories, so many pictures that I couldn't link them all back to their source. To see whose picture it is, please look at the source directory of the picture, their name is there.
I'd like to thank all the Fixers, Daniels BMW, the vendors for coming out and for contributing so much to make this a great event and to help some homeless folks at the same time we help ourselves and eachother.
THANK YOU!

It's 8 o'clock on Saturday morning, March 31, 2001. Do you know where the Z3s are?

Lining up outside Daniel's service door... of course...

This is Joe Millington, the Service Director of Daniels. He's asking... "Are you ready for FIXIT DAY?" We all went fairly nuts... the door rolled open... and in we went...like kids let out of school heading for the candy shop....

I also made an appointment to bring the car in on the 16th to have some body work done.

The tech who worked on my car was Mike - and he did an awesome job - I am so happy with the exhaust and lights!

While Mike and Steve lower the oem exhaust, the Dual Rounds wait between her car and Mick's.

Graced with those two fat chrome pipes, her car is lowered to begin the footlight install.

The techinicians worked straight through lunch for the second year in a row. They were allowed a little Knish Break, but they wouldn't leave their stations! C'mon, have a little knish...

Thank you very much for organizing me and making Karen and myself feel so welcome.
I have owned the car for four years and you know I am pretty intense about it,
but this was the first time I ever attended an event like this.
I must say I was pleasently surprised with how great the people were.

I had the wheel well lights installed and by rear bumper painted.
More importantly I met tons of great people I really enjoyed talking to.
Thanks again!
By the way today I attended my first autocross.
That's right I attended it without my car...Rain!

Very, Very FUN!

Bruce and Carter came all the way from Chicago for Fixit Day in Allentown!

About this time, we were rockin and rolling, in full swing, Z3s everywhere being worked on. Web called us all together for prize drawings and gift giving- as if all they were doing for us wasn't enough!

Daniels gave me a beautiful BMW scarf, we gave them back a signed photo from Homecoming 2000.
Anyone who was in the photo signed on top of their car.
There were many prizes and very much appreciated!

We love Daniels.

From this photo of BMW headquarters in Germany- carefully hand carried overseas by Web- to the Roundel in the men's room- hey, where's the ladies room Roundels?

It's just after noon, why hasn't Jim bought a Z3 yet? He bought one 2 days later. Here's 4 of 5 Z3Girls present, Lisa #1, KathyMack, Cousin Lisa and Rachel...Melissa's busy checking out her new Supersprint.
We understand.

On Fixit Day even a 500 series has to make way for the little Z3s
After lunch and gifts and prizes and a big THANK YOU from Lisa #1, her Mom and the Third Street Alliance Women and Children's Shelter, we were treated to demonstrations by Rob.

Is it possible to easily swap the grills?
My 3.0i has the chromed slats, but I prefer the basic black, non-chromed ones.
If it is possible, does anyone going to Fixit day this weekend want to swap their black slats for my chromed ones?

Thanks,
John

Let's see, I had:
-V1 hardwire - Ahhh, no more coily cord! (Bob, of Daniel's)
-Xpel'd headlights and fog lights - hope I never have to put it to the

-Oil/filter change. (I thought I was early changing at 2000 miles, until
Rob had his changed with 700 miles!) (Bob, of Daniel's)
-Interior detailing by Dale & James of Rigalis - the black leather looks *really* good in there now!
-*All-black grills* custom painted by the two guys (I forgot their names)with the van. (still have to install them)

black painted chrome grills installed -Almost impulsively had a Dinan engine and transmission programming done, until I found out Dinan's still developing the code for the 3.0. (so my credit card bill won't be as bad as it could have been) -Lusted over Rachel's new wheels with the 255 series Bridgestone's on the back. (wider than the stock M Roadster's, "wider is better") -Watched Rob's car get torn apart. This was my first Z3 event - it turned out very nice.

I had footwell lights, oil change, and wood trim changed out for alum trim. At first it looked like it wasnt going to be possible to get the trim work done as it was getting late in the day, but Web had two guys work on it until about 6 to get it done for me.

Then they couldnt get the wood handbrake off... I watched in horror after I gave them permission to cut the wood one off, and prayed the knew alum wood would fit in its place which they werent sure of before hand.

But it did, and everything turned out great in the end finally - very relieving!

I had a great time, nice meeting people and checking out everyone's rides.

Great Show!! This Fix-It day event was truly a Saturday well spent...
the weather was just about perfect.. nice enough to be outside..
but not so nice that we would have all been itching to take the tops down
and hit the road!!
Here is a link to my Photopoint Album for Fix-It day..
I weeded through and removed any poorly composed or focused shots,
and ended up with about 65 shots..
I changed the captions to reflect the subject....

Just a recap of the work I had done..

3/30 - 6pm: my friend Tom shows up at my house with his bag..
he packed for a week... I said "Tom, just because your SAAB Conv. has a trunk
as big as a walk in closet does not mean you will be able to fit your whole wardrobe in my Z3.."
we will address that later..

3/31 - 12:15am... we arrive at the Super8 and drive immediately to the rear
of the building to find a beautiful site of Z3's lined up - ONLY Z3's... yeah!!
Park... check in.. tell front desk we must have a rear facing room...
2nd floor will do! As we grab our bags.. there is a minivan sitting at end of row
(closes to Rachel's emmy)

3/31 - 7:45am: Time to check out and head to Daniels..
Tom and I meet JonT while waiting for someone to check us out..
I guess JonT decides not to wait and he heads out to take a photo..

3/31 - 8:00am: We walk to the Z3 parking area behind the Super8
and are greeted by Bruce and Carter.. they offer to lead the way to Daniels..
great idea since we have no way of knowing where we are..
I like following Bruce since he has the Supersprint Exhaust with the DTM tips..
and I will have same by end of day...

3/31 - 8:05am: We arrive at Daniels and line up..
the Fix-It day festivities are about to begin... Tom and I begin meeting people..
names I know from the Z3 message board
are being matched up with faces.. and cars... T
he 1st place I go is to the Service Counter to get signed in..
get my spot in the Queue... I meet Ann and Pat and we take a few moments
to inspect the seats in our cars and confirm that a swap will take place..
PAT and ANN just picked up a new (to them!!) 98 Z3
(to go with the white 1.9 they already have :o)
and they felt the Sport Seats were w bit much for them..
so after posting to the message boards.. and my replying to them..
we decided to meet at Fix-It day to make the swap happen..
my standard leather heated seats for thier sport leather heated seats..
each of us gets what we want.. and everyone is happy...
meanwhile Tom is off taking in the sights and checking out the other cars
already in "Fix-It" mode... I check in and grab a bite to eat... and begin to mingle..

3/31 - 9:30am: I decide to test drive a 98 M3 sedan.. Black.. so nice!!
3/31 - 10:00am: It is my turn for Z3 Fix-It fun... my car is brought into the service bay and treated ever so gently by Steve.. Steve let Tom and I watch his handy work, ask questions, and all the while he worked on my HMS Strut Tower Bar, swapping out my standard seats with Pat's Sport Seats... and then installing my SuperSprint exhaust with DTM tips... 3/31 - 11:30am My car is complete.. and is moved out to the lot for the viewing pleasure of others... Z3 Solutions paint matched door guards Tom and I spend the remainder of the morning and afternoon mingling about.. checking out the work others are having done.. looking at Daniels new and used inventory... and just having a great time in general... we grab some lunch.. from the Fix-It day buffet.... and mingle some more.. around mid afternoon EdScuba shows up and I spend some time talking with Mrs Scuba about Golden Retrievers... they have two and I have two... so plenty to talk about.... All in all - I could not think of a better way to spend a cool spring Saturday!! Tell Web he was a pleasure to work with as well - as was his staff and technicians (especially Steve - my tech). Fix-it day was a huge success thanks to Rachael. You go girl. However those of us who did attend had the opportunity to see Ed Scuba's great invention to the "What do I do with my flat tire?" He has put together this contraption that holds the flat on the outside of our cars instead of asking the person sitting in the passenger seat to share the seat with the flat. He drove to fix-it day with his prototype attached to the outside of the Z3. Can't wait for him to begin marketing this great invention and solution. Nice job Ed Scuba. Now get them ready for sale. The nice weather is coming and a flat tire can be a nightmare without this great solution.

"It was a great day. I'm thrilled with everything that happened that day -
from the work on my car to the fabulous contributions from everyone for the shelter.
I will be calling Web in the morning to see what the story is about the delivery.
I would like to go up and help them to pack everything up (and take pictures)
and to be there for the delivery.

I had the hood xpel replaced,

my REAL wheels put back on

(I can't believe Bud posted a picture of my car with those butt ugly wheels on it!),
chrome tailpipe tips, and a trunk mounted CD changer.

You will be glad to know that ZINDRLA got a thorough bath and interior cleaning.
Good thing, too, because when I removed all that dirt I found that I must have driven
through some type of petroleum product recently that had left some really nasty residue on my car.
Took me and my step-father hours to get all of it off. If only I weren't so stupid yesterday,
I would gladly have signed up for Carlos to detail my car (his work was amazing).

The delivery went smooth and the folks at the shelter were extremely pleased.
We ended up with over $600 in check donations and more "stuff" that they thought was possible.
The comment from the director of the shelter was "you guys must have big cars to get all this stuff".
I took her outside and showed her my car and she was shocked. :)

Once they finish sorting everything out - they would like to be able to share with all
of those who contributed what was done with some of the items.
You would have laughed if you could have seen the staff going through the stuff
and picking stuff out that they needed within their individual programs.
Pantyhose gathered up by the workforce training person,
crayons, paints, glue sticks and such quickly picked out by the daycare people,
cleaning supplies gathered up by the residential living director,
diapers and wipes secreted away by the shelter director for distribution.
It was kind of fun to watch as they got all excited over glue sticks.
I can't even imagine how long it will take them to full go through all of those bags,
but they were happy beyond belief.
This was their single biggest donation they have ever had!
They were so impressed by the generosity of people.

I just wanted you to know that all went well.
I have asked their publicity person who is responsible for the thank you letters and receipts
to be sure to include the dealership in these letters.

One of the folks from Daniels starts to load the shelter donations into the 500 series wagon.
There is no way one wagon will be enough.

As we started to unload, John H arrived in dark hardtop.
Carter and Bruce arrived shortly thereafter, followed by Pat and Ann.
Rachel had arranged with the hotel to block us together in the back where
we could park our cars together outside our windows.

Install Xpel on headlights and foglights.
I had a couple of existing scratches, but after seeing the foglight damage
to Rachel's cousin Lisa's Z3, I wanted the protection!

Most of the day I spent walking, talking, watching and taking pictures.
The demo on installing the spare tire was not one to be missed.
Spent a bit of time watching the paint guys repair Cousin Lisa's spoiler.
Nice work. Made certain my parts were ordered for the extra work,
said my good byes to Web and Joe and headed across the street for drinks
and sandwiches with some friends, old and new.

On the way home, I had to break away from our little group way too soon for my exit.

Lost count of the number of times I played with the footwell lights on the way home.
Hard to believe this isn't a factory option.

I added an extra half hour to the 3hour drive home by trying out the new strut brace
on a few backroads.

RichNYC and Lisa #1 are just crazy. Insane.
My car was slipping on the ramps because of the new tires,
so they held the ramps in place WITH THEIR FEET!

What a major improvement on that front spoiler! I am sorry I don't have pics of what a great job the Leather/Vinyl repair folks did on my interior.
Footwell lights are second nature to me now... doesn't everyone have them? While they were in there, they swapped out my US wiper module for the Euro version that allows you to set the intermittent wiper speed.
My car is better than new!
