I sent this guy an email in English to see if he'd respond. I've got a friend in Sweden right now that can probably speak German if this guy doesn't reply quickly. I'll send him this link in a day or so and see if he can help. If there were some way we could determine for sure that the 47xx model number will run US software, it would be worth the investment. Ron, what model number is your unit? Is it one of the 47xx models?

ipod plans?
Quote:
eVal, Just curious where you mounted/plan on mounting your ipod. I will be mounting a ipod mini in a few weeks and plan (at least as of today) to mount it to a Panavise cell phone mount just to the right of the TP, and hard-wiring through a hacked-up Belkin auto adapter for both power and line-out. But I'm open to other people's ideas. |

Thanks so much for your time. I'm bringing it back to the shop for them to check the GAL wiring and I got a 7860 changer new for $275. I know about it always returning back to CD1/Track1 but I can live with that. I'll ebay the oem bmw changer. |

Everyone knows they have to add the GAL wire to the harness, right?

I
though the GAL wiring is already there. GAL is the speed sensitive
wire. It's pin 10 (black/white wire) on the BMW radio connector. All
you have to do is to mate this with corresponding GAL pin on the H/K
connector.
It's the reverse wire input that's on the H/K connector that doesn't have a corresponding pin on the BMW radio connector. That's the one that should be run (but apparently doesn't have to/ or only needs to be grounded).

Yes, but the BMW harness you buy doesnt have a pin for pin 10. You have to add it.
I am considering pulling pin 7 or pin 17 out of the car side of hte harness and running it to the reverse wire so its still a fully removable system. Mpire

Ok...
Now that I have my TP installed.... I find myself wishing for newer software. I mean, the western bypass isnt even on this thing. I guess that I like the fact that it recalculates so quickly, because I can use it to help me navigate. I always know the fastest way to get to a general area, but its the getting me to my destination when I get close to it that makes the difference. Overall its great. A few complaints... It seems to jump to Z88 all the time. I dont know why, or how, but its very annoying. It will stop the CD playing and jump to the Z88 station. It does the same thing when you hit the TP button. I dont get it. How do you turn off the radio? Cant I have this thing on and not playing the radio or a CD or something. I just want it to be silent. I will figure this out eventually. Aux in works great. I find that if you put it in night mode screen all the time it is easier to read by far all the time. At least for me. I am getting up to 7 satellites for sure. I think it even said 9 at one point. Is this possible? It was on the western bypass when I got so many. The arrow is good too. It always points towards your destination, which helps you when you go off the map into "offroad" I need that new software bad. Orlando is growing way too fast for the software to be out of date. You have to adjust the NAV voice while it is speaking using the left knob. To get it to speak press the left knob. When you get a chance check out the links I sent you today. Much better explanation of things than what you received with the TP. Last edited by Ron Stygar : 04-19-2004 at 08:17 PM. |

Thanks Ron...
I was getting ready to go back to the stock headunit. Z88 is just the first radio station on the tuner. Its a christian station. I am not sure why its in there. I just goes to the first one on the dial and I havent figured out why. Tends to jump to it every once in a while for no reason. Often times whenever nav speaks up, then it goes to that station when the nav voice is done. What links did you have for more info than the manual gives you? Mpire

About the radio station "jumping" to the first position on the dial, by default, the unit is in DAS mode (Dynamic Auto Store). It continuously sorts stations by signal strength, with the strongest signal going to the first position, the second to the second, etc. To stop this from happening and to manually assign particular stations to particular buttons, you need to put it into either "Stations Fix" or "Stations RDS" mode. |

Maybe you have the unit in Traffic Program (TP) mode. Is TP indicator on? If so, the current source, (CD, AM, FM ) will be interupted so that transmitted traffic announcements can be made. Use the TP key to turn it off. BTW in the bay area, The Bone and KFOG transmit the tp signal, but I have not heard any announcement yet. -- Scott |

DIY Cable
I would like to thank everybody that contributes to this board, thanks for all you do.
For those making your own adapter cable, some hints I found. 1) The cheap Scosche adapter (P.N. BW01B $7.95) does not use the BMW pins. It does not have pin 10 installed (GAL signal), and does not have extra unused pins. I could not find any pins to fit this connector. 2) I bought another adapter (Metra 70-8590 $14.99) at Fry's electronics, thinking I would remove a pin from this one for the Scosche. Turns out this adapter uses BMW pins, so that idea didn't work. 3) I bought some BMW pins (61-13-0-007-452 $2.69) at the dealer, inserted it into the Metra connector pin 10 and I was good to go. 4) I followed Mpire suggestion, and mounted the GPS antenna on top of the center plastic air duct, under the dash, by removing the center air vent. It's easy as pie, and I get great satellite reception 7,8,9 and even 10 satellites. I even get 4 or 5 in my garage. 5) I hooked the reverse wire to the ground pin, no problems so far. -- Scott |
