Yellow connector

Here is a 7X pic of the yellow line out connector. Does Audi make connectors? Anyone have an Audi parts CD? Just curious if the part number 4A0 972 643 is on it and if it shows a part number for the pins.

Just checked my TP out. You are correct in that it is fully adjustable. Apparently my TP came from the factory set to full front, full right and I assumed that it wasn't adjustable. Thanks for the tip.

Before calling Burl, I figured that I would stop at the VW dealer and see if they could help. Wasn't expecting much, but I walked out with two gold pins with wire attached on the house. Note the AMP on the pin.

Becker 7860 changer arrived

Received the Becker changer today. I also orderd an extra magazine.
Unlike the one that came with the changer, this one has all of the Sony writing on it. It's a Sony XA-T7.
Did a search on this to see if it was available for less and it is.
Also did a search on what changers it is used on. It's used on Sony changers CDX-T67, 68X, 69 and 70MX. Called up the CDX-T69 one and it looks just like the Becker one that I received.

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/...ems&i=158CDXT69

It's available here for less.

http://www.sounddomain.com/search.pl?search_str=cdx-t69

Looking at the cable that came with it, the CD changer end is the same as the Sony CD changer I pulled out of my ti.
Looks like Becker is using a Sony CD changer. Unless they are requesting something special, it looks like they take the Sony CD changer cable and add their connectors to the radio end.
We now know how to purchase the Becker connectors and pins, so maybe we could do the same.

First, the part number is 4A0 972 643. The 3rd character is a number, not a letter. It can be purchased here: http://www.vwparts.com for $3.14 each. I have a VW/Audi parts CD (up to MY 2000). When I get home I'll try to look this up for you to see if it has any pins.

That looks like part of the adapter I have to tap into the pre-amp out leads from my Jetta's factory radio. Does the rest of your part look like this?

Ron,

Somehow I managed to skip over the post where you found the pins. If you do need anything looked up on the VW/Audi ETKA, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The yellow output connector 4A0 972 643 and cable that comes with the TP has 5 phono plugs on it. Line out: L/R, F/R and subwoofer.
The other two connectors are green 4A0 972 643A and blue 4A0 972 643B. Will order all three from my VW dealer just to do it.
I'm also interested in a connector pin removal tool.
I assume that the unit in your car is a Becker one?
Where can one purchase the VW/Audi ETKA?

Actually, the unit in my car is the VW factory supplied radio, built by either Panasonic or Blaupunkt. The preamp out adapter is a Blaupunkt part that also plugs into several of the Blaupunkt aftermarket offerings. It provides LF, LR, RF and RR line out phono plugs and an amplifier turn-on lead. I'm told the 6th pin position is a ground on my radio, but I haven't had the need to verify that.

I've got both a US and a European ETKA (on different CD databases), found through various internet sources. They are not as easily obtained as the BMW versions. I haven't looked in a few years, but I'll see if I can find a source for you.

I think I have a part number for a pin removal tool as well. Let me see if I can track that down. Failing that, I've been told that you can remove the pins with a very small paper clip and a lot of patience.

OK. Thanks.
I tried a paper clip. Even filed a flat on the sides to emulate the BMW tool that I have. No cigar.

Radio pins

I had a Sony head unit and changer in my ti. It had no pin for the alarm opening. The ti has the opening but was not wired for the alarm.
I'm wanted to use the pin for support with the TP. I sold the stock radio with the pin long ago. I didn't think that these pins would be available separately, but I found them on the EPC. Both pins shown in the pic are used on the Z3's and many other models.
The doubled sided stud came with the HK TP. It has a T10 TORX on one end to screw (self tapping) it into the back of the radio opening.

I stopped at the VW place today to see if they could come up with a pin removal tool. The parts guy I got this time wasn't that accommodating. He came up with part number 1978/7. The number he called for price and availability wasn't in today. Supposed to let me know. Based on the guy, it would be nice to know if this is the correct number before purchasing one.

Ron,

What I have written down is Lisle # 56500. Here is a picture of it:

I haven't bought this tool yet, so I can't verify if it is the correct one. But it is the one that most of the VW modifying types are using.

VW wants $55.00 for the tool which they claim is their cost.

Just ordered the Lisle #56500 one for $9.21 from:
http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pr...uctModelId=2163

Also, someone purchased a Sony T69 changer to try with the Traffic Pro.

Ron,
Thanks for posting this information. For some reason, my TP came without the moutning nub. My TrafficPro install in my M roadster was never quite right for the past 6 months, since it lacked this "mounting nub" and pin. I called Becker and they sent me the "mounting nub" (their term) gratis and I added it in. Needless to say, it made the world of a difference in terms of the fit. Anyone not installing this nub and pin for Z3/M roadster/coupe is well advised to do so.

Today, I ordered the two connectors and pins from VW to convert the Sony CD changer cable to a Becker one. Connectors retail for $3.96 each.
I have two Sony changer cables from my '96 328is and '97 318ti Sony changers. I cut the end off one of them to see if it had the same number of wires and if they were the same color as the Becker modified one. As expected, they are the same.

Tool showed up today. It doesn't work. The tool doesn't physically fit into the connector opening.

I'm sorry about that Ron. I've kept looking through the archives and haven't found any other tool listed. I hate that you wasted your money and wish I could help. However, with the total loss of my Jetta and the subsequent replacement (with a Mini), I don't expect I'll be spending a lot of time in the late model VW forums in the future.

Color Matching issues...

To those who have the trafficpro with the red face....

How does it match the red M logo on you shifter, and the red needles on the tach etc. Also the red of the hazard lights?

If it matches well with those, then I would be perfectly happy with the red one. Just need a little guidance.

It matches the stock shifter color well. But be forewarned by Ron's and my experience that the red display is pretty hard to read in bright sunlight. You may be less than happy with the functionality. But, it depends on what your goal is.

Zoran stopped by today with his Sony changer. No worky control wise. No smoke. Looks like the control bus is different. He left it here for me to play with.
Would be nice if Horst told us this wouldn't or would work.

Wow, wish I'd found this thread a few months ago, some great info here.

Just a few thoughts on my experiences with the TP.

First off, I managed to secure mine new in the box from an Ebay seller for $550 back in August, when retail was still $1500 at Crutchfield, and the same seller seems to have about two a month that go for this price range. Do an Ebay search on Traffic Pro every now in then if you're in the market.

Second, I own a Phatbox that I was using with my Sony headunit, getting a Traffic Pro cable and a quick software download had me operating with the Traffic Pro right away. Great thing is, you get both SSA voice and Track/Title text.

Due to the method in which I got the HK, I didn't have any choice in display color, I was stuck with amber. The seller now carries red displays on occasion. I REALLY want the red display, it's encouraging to find out that faceplates can be swapped. When I talked with HK customer service back in the fall, the rep told me that I would need to purchase a new unit to change colors, the faceplates were not interchangable due to the security coding. I found this a little hard to believe, they would surely have SOME provision for replacing damaged or lost faceplates. But he was adamant about it, so I just figured I was stuck with amber.

By the way, visibility is already something of an issue with the amber display, in that if I wear polarized sunglasses, the display is completely invisible, in either positive or negative mode. Other than that, it's quite readable in the daylight.

I installed mine in my E36 with no real issues other than the general pain of cable routing to the rear (for the new Phatbox cable). Since I had already went aftermarket, I'd previously connected a Metro wiring harness adapter, which helped make it a pretty painless operation.

Finding a speed signal for the GAL/GPS was no problem, I left the reverse light switch unhooked, and cleanly mounted the GPS antenna at the base of the windshield/dash on the passenger side with thin doublestick tape, after removing the metal baseplate. Since I'm running the Phatbox, I've used up the port for any sort of hands free phone, but then again, I refuse to saddle myself with a cell phone (call me weird, but call me at home).

Overall, I'm a very happy Becker/HK owner, it sounds great, looks very OEM, works perfectly with the Phatbox (though I'd do a few user interface changes if I could) and at the prices they retail for now, I think it's an excellent value.

Ron,

I was doing some research on the radio in my wife's New Beetle, and came across this page. It has some tips for removing the pins in the VW/Audi radio harness. Hope it helps.
